Our History

3 generations. 35 years.

Sea Gear Marine is in one of the top 3 commercial and sport fishing ports on the east coast of the US. But we came from humble beginnings.

1977

Chuck fell in love…twice.

It was 1977—the old, Wild West days of the fishing industry—and Chuck Barto fell in love with Renee Genovese. She was the daughter of a fisherman, and when Chuck married Renee, he also fell in love with the adventure of commercial fishing.

1981 - 1986

Gus teaches Chuck the ropes.

Chuck was lucky enough to learn the ins and outs of the trade from his new father-in-law,Augustus “Gus” Genovese, a veteran of almost 40 years. Gus fished, captained, and owned several commercial boats over his career, including his state-of-the-art Bluefin Tuna Purse Seiner.

Gus found great joy in the thrills of Tuna fishing—from spotting and circling the fish to pursing the net and preparing the giant tuna for its journey to Japan (to be turned into sushi).

In 1986, Gus sadly and unexpectedly passed away in the place he loved most in the world—at the wheel of his newest boat.

1986

Sea Gear Marine is Born

Chuck and Renee opened Sea Gear Marine in Gus’ memory, using his passion and expertise to build a business that would outfit the east coast commercial fishermen.

The Bartos grew Sea Gear Marine over the coming decades through a relentless commitment to serving the needs of people on the ocean, providing both top quality products and the dedicated service you’d expect from a family-owned business. It wasn’t uncommon to see their young sons, Peter and Sean, watching the counter while Dad made custom gear in the shop.

2000

Supplied Warner Bros. fishing materials for their movie "The Perfect Storm"

How cool is that?!

Perfect storm was filmed by Warner Brothers using boats from the south jersey area and Gloucester Mass. The Andrea Gail sank in 1991 and the movie was released in 2000. During the storm a buoy 264 miles south of Nova Scotia recorded a 107’ wave.

2020

Went the extra mile for a West Coast scalloper

None of the other East Coast suppliers wanted to deal with delivering cumbersome scalloping dredges to a customer across the country—but true to our motto, we made it happen. The staff at Sea Gear Marine went the extra mile to procure and deliver the dredges to this customer and friend on the West Coast.

2020 and Beyond

Outfitting everyone on the ocean

Sea Gear Marine still serves commercial fishing–and we’ve expanded to carry a full line of rugged fishing gear and accessories for commercial and recreational boaters and top-quality casual apparel for all outdoor enthusiasts. Plus, we still put our skills to use building custom marine and industrial materials for fishing companies, municipalities and construction companies.

Today, Chuck serves as the Chief Executive Officer, and Peter and Sean’s jobs have changed just a bit—they run the day-to-day operations, alongside many valued family members and dedicated employees.

(Renee enjoys spending her days with her ever-expanding school of grandchildren.)

The future of Sea Gear Marine

Since we're always looking to know do and offer more, Sea Gear Marine will continue to provide new products and services in the marine and industrial markets—both in the US and internationally.

Next up? We'll be opening some stores to serve customers on the Florida Coast. Get ready, Florida.
